Were you aware of the steps a wannabe dictator takes to become a dictator? There are official lists that go into incredible depth but here are 6 common well-worn steps (taken by countless horrible people in history) that you can actually do something about. It’s important to recognize them and understand what is happening, when it’s happening. Clarity is power.

First, a wannabe dictator must keep their subjects divided. A united front can lead to a revolution but a divided people is a conquered people. Wannabe dictators begin with sowing hate. Hate is a wannabe dictators best friend so they make the people hate each other. This is what Hitler did to spark his citizens, he harnessed their animosity and used it for his own goals.

Wannabe dictators tell their citizens that they have been wronged by one another and that they are victims of injustice. Wannabe dictators encourage the population to embrace their victimhood. They stoke the flames of righteous indignation leading their followers to trample the rights of others beneath their feet.

What is an easy way to divide? We hand them so many options for scapegoats and division — cultural, gender, age, education, religion and privilege. They choose their one side and teach them to shame the others.

Second, a wannabe dictator must make it difficult for their chosen followers to learn the lessons from those who see through the propaganda. Instead of learning from those who have experience, intelligence and understanding, they mock them. Mocking is easy, it requires no proof or truth and allows the wannabe dictator to delude the masses. The less fulfilled an individual, the more they fall into the mocking which feeds our basest levels. This makes them feel more self-righteous about themselves and gives them that need to want to prove to the world that they are right. This cycle feeds the wannabe dictator.

Third, wannabe dictators do not worry if what they say is true or false. For them, truth is subjective. They know that any lie told enough will eventually be regarded in truth. Pump up the people and organizations that back your lies. Discredit those who seek the truth.

Fourth, wannabe dictators do their best to keep the people distracted from the more meaningful matters of justice and liberty. They do their best to keep the population focused on trivial matters, stoking the flames of amusement, such as sports, games, rallies and TV, or ridiculousness, such as crazy social media posts for a recent example, to keep people talking and debating the things of no consequence.

Fifth, wannabe dictators teach the people not to trust each other. At every turn. In any way.

Sixth, wannabe dictators discredit valid democratic voting systems and will not accept a loss given by the population they wish to dominate.

How do we battle a wannabe dictator who would like to demolish the democratic process? We start by consciously, proactively doing the exact opposite.

We start with love. We first begin infusing everything we do and everyone we come by with love.

We start by doing our best to unite with each other, to find common ground with each other and have those productive conversations that lead to understanding.

We start by identifying trusted, non-partisan, researched resources and we pro-actively get unbiased news and information to help us make the most educated decisions we possibly can.

We start by paying close attention to history and the people who have lived through similar experiences and we learn from them.

We start by learning how to fulfill ourselves and grow to be the best human beings internally that we can be, so that we never feel the need to belittle or mock a fellow soul.

We start by demanding the truth and proof.

We start by pulling back the curtain of the circus they are showing us and really pay attention to what is happening behind the scenes.

We start by being the type of compassionate person another human being can trust to do the right thing for them.

We start by immediately invalidating any attempt by the wannabe dictator and followers to discredit our democratic system. We demand the same from our elected officials.

We have so much to start.
